Test Match Report |
Llandrindod Wells Rock Park Greens played host to a Test match over the last couple of days in which Wales beat England by 16 points to 7 in ideal bowling conditions.
The event, though poorly supported, was a wonderful advert for bowls played in a good sporting way by all the players. Wales' Andrew Fleming was unbeaten in his four games closely followed by Craig Williams, John Roberts and Neil Rees with three wins each. Duncan Hanmore was top of the English players with three wins and Ian Jenkins won two out of his four games.
Senior Vice President of the WBA, Hugh Meddins, thanked all the players for their sportsmanship as well as all those who helped to ensure the smooth running of this wonderful feast of bowls.

Ely Valley Wins Carruthers Shield |
Ely Valley won the Carruthers Shield at Llandrindod yesterday for the first time in their club history in an exciting and closely fought match with 3-times-in-a-row champions Pontrhydyfen.
Earlier in the day Ely Valley ran out comfortable winners against Gilfach Bargoed by 90 shots to 54, while Pontrhydyfen were pushed to the last end by Nixons finally winning 80 shots to 74.
The afternoon's final was delayed an hour due to a heavy downpour flooding the top green, but what an excellent game of bowls the sparse crowd witnessed with both teams leading at stages during the match and never more than 10 shots between them. The final few ends were the most tense and exciting seen in the competition for many years and going into the last end Ely Valley were leading by 1 shot. The end changed almost with every bowl and with just 1 bowl left to play for Ely Valley the match was all square. Then Ely Valley's John Applegate nicked the jack to one of their bowls for a famous victory much to the delight of his team mates. Proud champions Pontyrhydyfen
accepted defeat gracefully, the first time they had lost on the Llandrindod greens - the final score 76 shots to 74.

Triumphant Wales |
The Welsh test match team returned home victorious after an exciting match against England at Cheltenham Bowling Club over the 20th and 21st September. The competition finally decided by just a single point.
After play on Wednesday, which saw wins for Wales in two triples competitions and one rink, while England won one rink and the pairs competition, Wales led 6 points to 4. On Thursday morning, Wales won one pairs and one singles while England had triples and pairs successes leaving Wales a single point ahead with 6 points available in the afternoon session.
The first singles match was won by England and levelled the score, but it wasn’t long before Wales won the other singles to go ahead again. England then won the pairs on the last end to go 1 point up with only the rinks left on the green.
Wales appeared to be comfortably leading by 9 shots with 3 ends to play, but the England side picked up 4 shots on the next end, leaving the prospect of an exciting finish. Wales held their nerve and ditched the jack for a count of 5 shots, not needing to play the last end. Finally ending the competition with 12 points to England’s 11

Junior Internationals |
The Junior Internationals were held over the weekend 9th and 10th September, once again at Victoria Park, Leamington Spa, in glorious sunshine.
On the Saturday morning, Wales played Scotland and at 13 ends were 38 shots adrift, but a tremendous fight back saw them take the lead at 19 ends by 5 shots. In a terrific finish, all on the last bowl, Wales were pipped 128 - 125 with 2 winning rinks.
In the afternoon against England, a slow start saw them 20 shots down at the halfway stage, but another gutsy fight back saw them sneak the lead at 17 ends by one shot. In another nail biting finish, England got home by 8 shots, winning 3 rinks each. Wales' youngsters showed great character to get back into the match, finally losing 129 - 121.
That left the championship to be decided on Sunday morning with Scotland and England playing for the title. both teams unbeaten, and Wales and Ireland playing off for the wooden spoon. Another slow start saw Wales 10 shots down at 5 ends, but steady progress was made - they were only a couple of shots down at halfway, 14 shots up at 15 ends and finished in style, winning 131 - 111.
Scotland won the championship 122 -119 against England in another fantastic game of bowls, with England finishing second, Wales third and Ireland fourth.
WBA officers, selectors and spectators were so proud of the Welsh effort. President Eddie William in his thanks to the team said:
"On another weekend the result could easily have been reversed, such is the closeness of all the teams. Welsh bowls is in good hands with our juniors."
